Minority Segregation Processes in an Urban Context: a Comparison between Paris and Rome Recent trends in ethnic segregation in cities: Paris and Rome compared

    Get PDF
The process of minority segregation within global cities is a complex phenomenon. In the European urban context, the process of minority segregation seems to differ in the old immigration countries (France, UK, Netherlands, Germany) from the new immigration countries (Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal). The analysis compares two global cities (Paris and Rome), taking into consideration the current evolution of the minority segregation pattern. The study shows that no traces of increasing segregation emerge in either of the cities

Analyzing pork purchases at the point of sale – The role of consumer involvement

Involvement is an important psychological construct for understanding consumers’ underlying purchase decision process and those factors that shape product perceptions. In order to better understand consumer purchase behavior for low and high priced pork cuts, a series of field interviews at a variety of food retailers were conducted with actual pork shoppers using the New Involvement Profile (NIP) developed by Jain and Srinivasan (1990). In addition to responses to a series of questions designed to assess consumers’ involvement when purchasing pork, informational elements including socio-demographic information and pork attributes (e.g., origin, advertisement, on sale) were also included in the analysis. Key results from the study show individuals with high risk factors were significantly less likely to purchase high price cuts of pork. However this factor was mitigated by high price cuts on sale. Advertising is found to engage consumers with specific factors including those individuals who place a symbolic value on pork. Similar results are found for certain individuals based upon the type of store in which shopping took place. Results from our study may help companies to develop specific strategies to target high and low involved consumer segments. For instance, focusing on particular labeling schemes to increase consumers’ trust in meat producers could be used to target high involved shoppers. Additionally, based upon the empirical evidence this would have an added benefit by supporting the purchase of higher priced cuts of pork.pork, purchase behavior, consumer involvement, point of sale, Agribusiness, Consumer/Household Economics, Marketing, C93, D12, Q13,

Who cares about food origin? A comparison of hypothetical survey responses and actual shopping behavior

This paper explores the relevance of food origin to consumers when making product purchase decisions. We use data from a survey of pork shoppers at the point of sale of five food retailers in Germany. Participants engaged in both a hypothetical survey eliciting evaluations of the importance of different pork attributes and a series of questions related to their knowledge about the attributes of their actual purchase of pork. This enables us to compare hypothetical responses with actual purchase behavior. The results show that origin indeed is a relevant attribute to a subset of consumers. A share of consumers does pay attention to origin labels and is willing to undertake costly search for origin information. Furthermore, the data give evidence that there is a strong, but not perfect, degree of agreement between hypothetical survey responses and actual shopping behavior. This result is supportive of the use of experimental methods.hypothetical survey responses, actual shopping behavior, pork, origin labeling, Consumer/Household Economics, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

Consumer Preferences for Country-Of-Origin, Geographical Indication, and Protected Designation of Origin Labels

Motivated by the recognition that geography is often correlated with and/or an important determinant of the overall quality of agricultural products, consumer groups, industry representatives, and domestic and trade representatives have increasingly considered the potential role of geographical origin labels as consumer information and marketing tools. We investigate whether consumers recognize and value the informational content of a variety of nested geographical origin labels. In particular, this study disentangles and assesses three nested types of origin labels: country of origin (COOL), geographical indications (GI), and PDO/PGI. We find that, within the context of a high quality valueadded commodity such as extra virgin olive oil, consumers' willingness to pay varies across different countries of origin, and that within a country consumers have a greater willingness to pay for GI-labeled than non-GI labeled products. We also find evidence that consumers value PDOs more than PGIs, but the result is not as strong as that found for GI versus non-GI. Overall, our findings support the recent surge in interest by both developed and developing nations in reaching an agreement for stricter and more widespread protection of GIs within ongoing WTO discussions and harnessing them as marketing tools for expanding shares in export markets.geographical indications; consumer preferences; country of origin labels; PDO; PGI; olive oil

Light on Vallette, Torino. Progetto di Qualificazione Urbana per l’area centrale del quartiere - Light on Vallette, Turin. Urban Regeneration Project for the neighborhood’s central area

Light on Vallette, Turin. Urban Regeneration Project for the neighborhood’s central area

Starting from a reflection on the role of city planning policies at a European and local level in enabling socially innovative regeneration actions, we present the first results of a research project focusing on Le Vallette, a residential district in Turin, which aims to define how the district could be transformed by a regeneration project for its central area. While our work is limited by a tight deadline, it has been undertaken after constant dialogue with the communities and associations active in the area, and one of its main aims is to identify physical and functional strategies to reconnect and promote the sharing of introflexed and strongly degraded spaces and buildings

Sticky/Citron kinase maintains proper RhoA localization at the cleavage site during cytokinesis

In many organisms, the small guanosine triphosphatase RhoA controls assembly and contraction of the actomyosin ring during cytokinesis by activating different effectors. Although the role of some RhoA effectors like formins and Rho kinase is reasonably understood, the functions of another putative effector, Citron kinase (CIT-K), are still debated. In this paper, we show that, contrary to previous models, the Drosophila melanogaster CIT-K orthologue Sticky (Sti) does not require interaction with RhoA to localize to the cleavage site. Instead, RhoA fails to form a compact ring in late cytokinesis after Sti depletion, and this function requires Sti kinase activity. Moreover, we found that the Sti Citron-Nik1 homology domain interacts with RhoA regardless of its status, indicating that Sti is not a canonical RhoA effector. Finally, Sti depletion caused an increase of phosphorylated myosin regulatory light chain at the cleavage site in late cytokinesis. We propose that Sti/CIT-K maintains correct RhoA localization at the cleavage site, which is necessary for proper RhoA activity and contractile ring dynamics
